Rock carvings

Wednesday 10th October

Todays quest was viewing prehistoric rock carvings in the Assa Valley... up on the alto piano above us. Needless to say this involved trekking down, down, down into the valley and then up, up, up after the viewing. The rock carvings were discovered in 1981 after a flood changed the watercourse in the valley which at one stage  was a trading highway  from upper to lower valley. It is thought that some of the carvings date to the Iron Age while others are probably later, ie some are crosses. They are fenced off so you can't get close so a bit of guesswork needed to pick them out, especially in the gloom of the valley but we had fun trying.

The walk was soooo strenuous we decided to try the recommended gnocchi at Albergo Gek at Castana for lunch. It  was delicious, not rolled along the fork like Mrs C's but still melt in the mouth  (No wonder my jeans are getting a bit tight)

Forest track down to the valley

Looks like a stick figure to me

This one was an igloo-shaped house
