Eagle's Nest

Friday 21st

Straight off after classic european breakfast of cold meat, cheese and bread. A boiled egg produced by the hostess's own chooks also on offer, plus berry jam made from some berry found on the mountains..   couldn't identify it.

One hour to destination, lovely drive through valley to Hitler's Eagle's nest, built  and presented to Hitler by Martin Bormann for his 50th birthday. It can only be reached by taking a special bus, then walk through a tunnel to an elevator shaft set deep in the mountain.....   along with a multitude of other tourists.  The building itself is now operated as a restaurant, while down below where you buy the bus/entry ticket there is a very informative museum which tells the story of how Hitler brought the German people to believe it was OK to eliminate 2/3 of the Jews in Europe (half the Jews is the world) I thought the restaurant was crass commercialism and the building itself would have been put to better use as the museum.

On the way back to gasthaus, stopped at Hohenwerfen Castle. Entry ticket included a birds of prey falconry display which was breathtaking with the birds swooping so close the rush of air from the wings was audible. The castle dates from 1070 and served Salzburg's rulers -the prince archbishops (church and state power) over centuries. Varied history, fire, stormed by peasants in the 16th c .. go the peasants! All in all it is a most complete example of a medieval fortified castle and the guided tour v interesting.
