2 nights in Zermatt (German speaking)- lovely old (and new) alpine village which appears to be main set off point for climbers conquering the Matterhorn and surrounding peaks. Graveyard attests to perils... in fact a Church of England church was built 1872 following first successful climb in 1865 - at first to cater for English climbers, who made up the majority of the adventure tourists, it then became necessary for funerals of those killed in the attempt. Graveyard has many graves of those who have died young... seems a hazardous hobby. Popular in Oxford in past years by the look of gravestones.
The Vispa river traverses the village and the rush of water is a constant background noise... not much competition. .. no cars.. electric only and bikes. Cars left at Tasch carpark below and train up.
Weather forecast was for best chance of viewing the peak in the morning so we were at the chairlift station when it opened at 8.30.... all rugged up. 45 minutes in 2 different gondolas to get there...Temp at viewing platform -2° Reasonable views... bit of now you see it, now you don't.
