The Ice Cave

Saturday 22nd

Today off to the Eisriesenwelt .... translation.... Ice caves. They are the largest ice caves in world, extending 42 ks through the Hochkogel mountains. Although not far from where we are staying, quite a procedure to get there. We drove 3 k mountainous climb( poor gutless little peugeot doing it mostly in 1st gear) to carpark, uphill walk for 20 minutes, into an almost vertical cablecar, then another uphill walk for 15 minutes to the cave entrance!  Within the cave itself, 700 steps up and 700 down! We end up going 1 k into the cave system, carrying carbide lamps for light. Very impressive, temperature zero, different formation to limestone caves we are familiar with in Australia. When they open the door to the cave there is a  freezing rush of air. It is the the flue affect of the air through the cave that forms the ice. Some parts show the layers of ice formation over the years, one of which showed 2000 years.
